The X Factor judge Simon Cowell has declared that he welcomes any competition in the battle for the Christmas number one.

After a Rage Against The Machine internet campaign successfully prevented last year’s winner Joe McElderry from clinching the top spot, this Christmas a group is planning to silence The X Factor with John Cage’s ‘silent’ track, 4’33”.

Talking to reporters at the press conference for this weekend’s X Factor final, Simon said: “It sounds like a great record and I wish them every possible luck. We got a wake up call last year but it makes the race more exciting. I welcome the competition now. Genuinely.”

He then cheekily asked any radio journalists present: “Are you going to be playing it?”

And teasing about this year’s winner’s single, he added: “Each artist has got their own record, which is completely geared to them, they’re not all singing one song.”
