Simon Cowell has hit back at a Facebook campaign to stop the X Factor single from landing this year’s Christmas number one, describing it as ‘stupid’ and ‘cynical’.

Rage Against The Machine fan Jon Morter is urging members of the social networking site to download his song, Killing in the Name, to stop the winner of the ITV1 talent show from claiming the Christmas number one for the fifth year in a row.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of this weekend’s X Factor final, Simon said: “If there’s a campaign, and I think the campaign’s aimed directly at me, it’s stupid.

“I think it’s quite a cynical campaign, geared at me, which is actually going to spoil the party for the three contestants.

He added that he thought the campaign dismissed fans of the X Factor as ‘stupid’. “And I don’t like that,” he said.
