Speculation is mounting that Simon Cowell may quit the next series of X Factor completely, according to the papers.

The Mirror reports that the mogul – who will spend much of 2011 preparing to launch the US version of the show – has yet to commit to the live stages of the next series.

He recently announced he would not be joining the audition stages of the show when it returns later in the year.

And the paper claims that desperate ITV bosses are even offering him sole use of a private jet so that he can “commute” between London and Los Angeles – although he has said this would be “too gruelling”.

“They are at their wit’s end,” a source said. “The X Factor is ITV’s biggest show and they can’t afford for it to flop. It’s getting to the point where they are literally willing to do anything in order to persuade Simon to appear in the live shows.

“But the simple fact is he can’t be in two places at once and he’s not sure he wants to be.”

A similar problem could arise if Cheryl Cole joins Cowell on the judging panel of the US show, although the final line-up has yet to be confirmed.

The US version of the show is due to begin in the autumn.
