Dame Edna Everage to retire before the public demand it

Dame Edna Everage has said she is retiring from touring because she wants to leave her ‘possums’ wanting more.

The flamboyant and outspoken entertainer – the creation of 79-year-old Australian comedian and actor Barry Humphries – is embarking on her farewell tour, Eat Pray Laugh, which has just opened at the London Palladium.

Dame Edna revealed: “I don’t want to be one of those artists who goes on beyond a certain point. I don’t want people to say ‘If only she’d retire!’ I want people to say ‘What are we going to do now Edna’s retired?!'”

The star admitted she had ‘bittersweet emotions’ about her final tour.

She added: “Goodness it’s so long since I began my, what can laughably be called, career in Melbourne, Australia. I never dreamt I would become a world famous actress or an international icon or a role model. I never dreamt it was possible. It has been a wonderful, wonderful – to use a hackneyed word – journey for me.”

And she admitted that over the years she has accumulated a large collection of unattractive art sent to her by fans.

Dame Edna revealed: “People do give me spooky things. They make sculptures of me which are always hideous, they do paintings of me which are ugly beyond before, I don’t think I’ve ever been given anything which would please me more than money.”

She plans to spend her retirement writing books, doing charity work and catching up with her family.

Speaking about the show, she promised: “People can expect a very big belly laugh every three minutes and a smile in between. And I have done something revolutionary in the theatre, if that doesn’t happen they can try to get their money back… emphasis on the word try!”
