Dames Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal) and Kate Winslet (Little Children) all received best actress Oscar nominations on Tuesday.

In a remarkable day for Anglo-Irish cinematic talent, 74-year-old Peter O’Toole earned a nomination for best actor for Venus, which is yet to be released in the UK.

As well, Sacha Baron Cohen was jointly nominated for best writing (adapted screenplay) for his mockumentary, Borat, while Stephen Frears was nominated in the best director category for The Queen, which also received a nomination as best picture.

There were other Oscar nods for British writing talent – Patrick Marber for Notes on a Scandal and Peter Morgan for The Queen.

This year’s Oscars will take place on Sunday, February 25.
