David Walliams has been named the most stylish man of the year by GQ magazine – and collected his award wearing denim hotpants.

The Little Britain star, who also donned an open white denim waistcoat and goggles, was presented with his award by Liz Hurley.

Before the ceremony for men of the year, at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, Walliams was asked about maintaining a sense of style during his cross-Channel swim.

“When you do something like that you’ve got to let go of vanity,” he said.

“It only occurred to me late on that everyone is going to see me in my swimming trunks… and it’s not going to be nice. You can’t really be stylish with a layer of grease on you.”

Take That received the biggest cheer of the evening when they received the band of the year award.

Yoko Ono, who presented the gong wearing a top hat, shades and leather jacket, described them as a ‘group who spread such positive feelings across the world’.

Accepting the award, Gary Barlow said: “We’ve really enjoyed these last three years.”

Earlier on the red carpet Howard Donald said of the band’s comeback: “It’s a combination of work hard, stay focused and a piece of luck. We’ve been lucky, there’s no doubt about it.”
