There were a few surprises at the National TV Awards (NTAs), but Ant and Dec’s success in the Best Entertainment Presenter category certainly wasn’t one of them.
The Geordie double-act – who scooped a host of awards at last night’s ceremony – have now won the prize an astonishing 13 years in a row, making their annual victory speech as familiar to TV viewers as The Queen Vic’s Christmas Day punch-up.
But with tongue firmly in cheek, perennial runner-up Dermot O’Leary claims his rivals have an unfair advantage over the rest of the nominees.
“There are two of them, so of course they have an edge over the rest of us!” joked the X Factor presenter. “To be honest I don’t think they’re not allowed to win the award. If someone had given it to me I would have died of shock and then just handed it to them!”
“But in all seriousness, they’re very good friends of mine and they deserve everything they get,” continues Dermot.
“They’re so prolific. I’m proud of the job I do, but they’re on TV for nine months of the year, doing three great shows. Every time I watch them they make me laugh so I can’t begrudge them anything.”
