Is The Last Kingdom the new Game of Thrones? We crossed swords with TLK star Alexander Dreymon to find out...
With its epic scale, high production values and heady, historical mix of swords, sex and savagery, The Last Kingdom, which returns to BBC2 this week for a second series, has drawn comparisons with hit fantasy series Game of Thrones.
But what does the show’s star Alexander Dreymon, who plays warrior Uhtred, who was born an Anglo-Saxon but raised by the invading Danes, think?
“Game of Thrones is the number-one show in the world right now, so it’s a compliment,” smiles Dreymon, as he talks to TV & Satellite Week on location in Hungary, where the 9th-century historical drama is filmed. “But the two are very different. It’s a similar genre, but they’re really nothing alike if you watch both. There’s sword-fighting, yes – but I think The Last Kingdom is a lot less glossy. It’s dirtier, grittier and truer, and there’s a tiny difference in budget as well!”
Series two of The Last Kingdom premieres on BBC2 on Thursday 16 March at pm
