Former Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill will be joining the cast of BBC1’s sweeping historical series The White Queen at the start of next month.

Arthur will be playing Harry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, a close of ally of future King of England, Richard Duke of Gloucester (played by Aneurin Bevan) and he explains that there’s “more to his character than meets the eye”.

Arthur – who played Doctor Who companion Rory Williams for two years – has certainly enjoyed a variety of roles since saying goodbye to the TARDIS last year and viewers will remember his fine performance alongside David Tennant and Olivia Colman in hit ITV drama Broadchurch.

Now we see him cropping up in a medieval drama and sporting a rather fetching haircut!

Arthur probably didn’t mind growing his hair for the role, but one thing he wasn’t prepared for was the horse-riding!

“I had to to learn to ride before filming. Well ‘learn’ is a too little strong. I had an hour lesson the day before filming!”

Arthur appears in The White Queen on Sunday August 4 at 9pm on BBC1.
