Anthony Head has revealed why he’s attracted to roles in fantasy dramas.

The actor, best known for playing Rupert Giles in cult series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and King Uther in BBC1’s Merlin, stars in Syfy’s apocalyptic drama Dominion, which returned for its second series this week.

Anthony told What’s on TV: “One of the reasons I’m attracted to this kind of writing is that it gives you an option as an actor to do some stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily do in other shows. But that’s what’s fun about being an actor – you get to do stuff that’s so far out of your own realms of experience that it’s fun to go there and see what happens.”

Anthony plays Senator David Whele in Dominion, which follows the perilous journey of a rebellious young soldier who discovers he’s the unlikely saviour of humanity.

Anthony continued: “The thing that’s fascinating about a series like Dominion is that the story arcs are really fun to play – this season especially has been a real ride for my character and for a number of characters because they’re constantly being greeted with dead ends and they’re having to think on their feet and react and change accordingly.”

But Anthony was quick to point out that he never wants audiences to think he only does fantasy drama.

He said: “I’ve done other stuff as well and I’ve tried to keep people guessing – if you end up doing all of one genre then people go: ‘Oh, that’s what he does’.

“I don’t think anybody quite knows what I do – I throw in the odd Iron Lady or Stephen Poliakoff [drama] just to keep people guessing.”

Dominion continues Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
