Draft Day | Film review – He’s Got Game: Kevin Costner’s charisma rescues routine sports drama

In American Football, Draft Day is when teams get their pick of the new crop of college players, and a great deal is riding on the decisions to be taken by Kevin Costner’s Sonny Weaver, general manager of lowly Cleveland. And not just on the pitch. This sports drama piles the pressure on its hero in some fairly predictable ways – a team owner (Frank Langella) breathing down his neck and a pregnant girlfriend (Jennifer Garner), to name but two. It all gets rather corny, but Costner’s charisma will keep you watching until the final whistle.

Certificate 15. Runtime 105 mins. Director Ivan Reitman.
