The colourful and exuberant animated movie Rio takes its cue from the sights, sounds and spirit of Rio de Janeiro at carnival time. The story revolves, however, around a figure who feels very much out of place there. Timid and neurotic macaw Blu – a perfect fit for the voice of Jesse Eisenberg – was born in the Brazilian jungle but has been raised in pampered domesticity by Minnesota bookstore owner Linda (Leslie Mann) and has never learned to fly. He gets taken out of his comfort zone when he goes to Brazil to mate with his species’ last female, Anne Hathaway’s feisty Jewel, and falls into the clutches of bird smugglers. With Blu and Jewel chained together (like the hero and heroine of The 39 Steps), there are thrills, spills and gags galore as the pair attempt to regain their freedom. Rio doesn’t soar as high as its Pixar peers, but at its best it really does take flight.
Released on DVD & Blu-ray on Monday 24th October from 20th Century Fox Entertainment.
