In offbeat romantic comedy Ruby Sparks, scripted by actress Zoe Kazan, Paul Dano (Kazan’s real-life boyfriend) plays a wealthy young author called Calvin who gets taken aback when his dream girl steps off the page and into his life.

Oblivious that she is a figment of Calvin’s imagination, Ruby Sparks (played by Kazan herself) becomes his adoring girlfriend, but when she begins making demands for herself, Calvin can’t resist rewriting her personality to suit his needs or whims – when he types the words ‘Ruby speaks French’, she’s immediately fluent in the language.

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the husband-and-wife team behind Little Miss Sunshine, handle this surreal fantasy with rare delicacy and wit. Some viewers may find the set-up more creepy than quirky; others will recognise Kazan’s Pygmalion-inspired tale as a sweet fable about the desire to mould the ones we love.

Released on DVD & Blu-ray by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on Monday 11th February.
