Richard Ayoade, afro-haired computer geek Moss in The IT Crowd, makes his directing debut with Submarine, a delightfully quirky coming-of-age comedy set in 1980s Wales. The film’s hero, played by puppyish Craig Roberts, is 15-year-old Oliver Tate, a nerdy schoolboy permanently fretting over the state of his parents’ marriage – and his own love life. While his mother (Sally Hawkins) dallies with mullet-haired New Age guru Graham (a hilarious Paddy Considine) and his marine biologist father (Noah Taylor) sinks into depression, Ollie has hopes of losing his virginity with mischievous pyromaniac Jill (Yasmin Paige). While clearly indebted to the films of Wes Anderson and the French New Wave, Ayoade’s impressive debut is full of wit and charm, and shows a fresh cinematic eye too.
