Ed Balls’ amazing run comes to an end as he becomes the 10th celebrity to exit Strictly

He was one of the favourites to leave Strictly Come Dancing first, but Ed Balls' exceptional run finally came to an end in the 10th week of the BBC1 contest

Despite his self-acknowledged limited dancing ability, Ed Balls has lasted a remarkable 10 weeks on Strictly Come Dancing, but on Sunday night his run came to an end.

All four judges voted to save Judge Rinder and Oksana Platero after he finished in the bottom two with Ed Balls and partner Katya Jones after Saturday’s performances.

Talking about his Strictly experience, former Labour shadow chancellor Ed said: “If people watching have had half the fun I’ve had learning to dance with Katya then they must have had a complete blast because it’s been such a fabulous thing. The judges, all the supporters, the make-up team, the wardrobe, in particular that band are the best in the world. It’s just wonderful.”

Ed continued: “But above all the only reason we have been able to learn and to entertain is because of Katya, and it’s her first series. She is going to go on to be a total dynamite, knock-out Strictly star, she is just the best there is. Absolutely amazing. She is utterly brilliant. And to all the people who have kept me in this long, thank you very much I’m very grateful, I’ve had a wonderful time.”

Katya responded: “There is so much I would like to say to you. I absolutely love this man, it’s my first series and I couldn’t have wished for better.”

After Saturday’s dances, the judges’ scores and results from the Cha Cha Challenge, where extra valuable marks could be earned, were combined with the results of the viewers’ vote to decide the two lowest scoring couples to face each other in the dance-off.

Both couples performed their routines again – Ed and Katya danced their Tango to (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones, while Judge Rinder and Oksana performed their Rumba to ‘Lean On Me’ by Bill Withers in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition.

After both couples had danced a second time, Tess asked the judges’ based on the dance-off alone, which couple they wanted to save .

Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Judge Rinder and Oksana and said: “On a more technical performance I would like to save Judge Rinder and Oksana.”

Darcey Bussell chose to save Judge Rinder and Oksana and said: “The couple I would like to save just on their better technical ability is Judge Rinder and Oksana.”

Bruno Tonioli chose to save Judge Rinder and Oksana and said: “Well, I have to choose the better dancers. Judge Rinder and Oksana.”

Head judge Len Goodman said: “I agree with my colleagues.”

Pop star Ellie Goulding performed earlier on the results show.

The remaining five couples will return to the dancefloor on Saturday 3rdDecember at 7pm.
