Eight million tune in to Red or Black debut

Big-budget game show Red or Black – in which contestants compete to win £1m – had an impressive debut, with a peak audience of 8.1m tuning in.

The show, which is hosted by Ant and Dec and produced by Simon Cowell’s company Syco, is the most expensive game show ever on TV, with a budget of around £7m.

It sees contestants having to correctly guess the outcome of ten rounds of stunts and games to be in with a chance of playing for the top prize.

Saturday night’s show saw bricklayer Nathan Hageman beat former Big Brother housemate Angel Mackenzie to the final round – and went on to become the first £1m winner of the series, which runs every night for the next week.

Meanwhile Jonathan Ross’s chat show debut on ITV1 attracted a peak audience of 4.6m – over a million more than the average audience for his equivalent show on the BBC. The 50-year-old signed up with ITV after quitting his contract with the BBC last summer.

Guests on his first show on Saturday night included Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker and chart-topping singer Adele.
