Entourage | Film review – Glossy escapism and breezy banter galore as the bros hit the big screen

Entourage - Eric (Kevin Connolly) and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), Vince (Adrian Grenier) & Johnny (Kevin Dillon)

Frequently dubbed Sex and the City for men, the hit HBO series get its own spin-off movie, and just like the big screen versions of SATC, it will probably delight fans and leave others cold.

Picking up where the TV series left off in 2011, Entourage the film finds Hollywood star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) still living it large with his posse of homeboys from Queens, New York – childhood chums Eric (Kevin Connolly) and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), and less successful older brother Johnny (Kevin Dillon).

Their circumstances have changed – best friend Eric is now producing Vince’s directorial debut, a big-budget Jekyll & Hyde-type action fantasy; and tubby driver Turtle has become a lean liquor mogul – but at heart they remain the same bunch of pleasure-seeking bros. Back in the game as a studio boss following a time out for anger management, Jeremy Piven’s absurdly aggressive agent Ari Gold is happily very much the same, too.

Entourage - Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) takes on mixed martial arts fighter Ronda Rousey

And, as on TV, there are cameos galore, from blink-and-you’ll-miss appearances by the likes of Liam Neeson and Kelsey Grammer to supporting roles for ‘Blurred Lines’ beauty Emily Ratajkowski and mixed-martial arts star Ronda Rousey, playing themselves.

Billy Bob Thornton pops up as the Texas tycoon funding Vince’s movie, and it’s the machinations of his horny idiot son (Haley Joel Osment, barely recognisable from The Sixth Sense) that provide much of what passes for the film’s plot. Not that the fans will mind. They’ll enjoy the glossy escapism of the boys’ hedonistic escapades and the breezy banter.

Certificate 15. Runtime 104 mins. Director Doug Ellin.
