Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is producing a series about the universe, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, combining drama, fantasy and stunning natural reality.

The 13-part Nat Geo Channel/Fox series harnesses world-renowned astrophysicists and TV producers to update the 1980 Emmy Award-winning series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

Seth said: “There’s never been a more important time for Cosmos to re-emerge than right now. I want to make this so entertaining, and so flashy, and so exciting that people who have no interest in science will watch just because it’s a spectacle.”

Hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the series aspires to awaken a global audience to the wonders of the universe from a scientific perspective.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey will invent new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and reinvent elements of the original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination.

It will screen on Nat Geo UK in 2014.
