Based on the acclaimed novel by Owen Sheers, Resistance is a haunting drama set in that most marvellous of imaginary settings, an alternative history. D-Day has failed, and Southern Britain is now under Nazi occupation.
One autumn morning in 1944, Sarah Lewis (a breathtakingly ethereal Andrea Riseborough) wakes up on her remote Welsh valley farm to find her husband has disappeared. But then she discovers that all the men from the nearby farms have gone. With the Germans on their way, the women left behind can only guess that their menfolk have gone off to join the Resistance. However, when the occupying Germans finally arrive in the valley, led by handsome captain Albrecht (Tom Wlaschiha), feelings of hostility soon give way to reluctant acceptance and then brooding passion as the young German men, far from home themselves, relish in helping with everyday tasks on the farms. But the Resistance is never far away and after local Resistance leader Michael Sheen appears beaten and on the run from the Gestapo, the war rears its destructive head. Beautifully shot on location, wonderfully written and impressively performed, this is a moodily atmospheric and memorable war film.
On general release from Friday 25th November.
