Film review | Robosapien – Googly-eyed robot saves the day in family-friendly sci-fi romp

This spin-off adventure for the popular remote-control toy pitches the cute, googly-eyed robot into a series of family-friendly scrapes and japes.

Designed for search and rescue, Robosapien is found in a skip and fixed by nerdy 11-year-old science whiz Henry (Bobby Coleman) after being set free by his inventor (David Eigenberg) to evade the clutches of the sinister Kinetech corporation, which wants to use him for military ends.

Nicknamed Cody by his rescuer, the robot quickly wins over Henry’s stressed single mom (Penelope Ann Miller) and stroppy teenage sister (Holliston Coleman) and helps him defeat the school bully. But Kinetech’s goons are still at large…

The film’s cloak-and dagger plot barely passes muster, but Cody’s antics – which include break dancing, tantrum throwing and blowing raspberries – will appeal to those young viewers whose behaviour they mimic.

Robosapien is showing at Empire Cinema Jnrs clubs on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th May and is released on DVD by Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment on Monday 28th May.
