The BBC has offered its first look at the cast of new drama series The Musketeers in action.

A newly released image shows stars Tom Burke (Athos), Howard Charles (Porthos), D’Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino) and Aramis (Santiago Cabrera), wielding weapons and rifles in the new version of the classic story.

However there is no sign of Peter Capaldi, who will also appear in the ten-part series as the villainous Richelieu.

“I’m thrilled we can finally release the first image since wrapping filming on The Musketeers,” said writer and creator Adrian Hodges.

“I hope the picture gives a good idea of the look and intensity of the Musketeers themselves, and a hint of the excitement of each powerful, dramatic and action-filled episode.”

No broadcast date has yet been confirmed for the show, although it is due to be screened in early 2014.

Hodges previously praised Peter Capaldi – who is set to take over from Matt Smith in Doctor Who at Christmas – for his acting qualities, saying: “The fact that Peter wanted to do it was wonderful, and in a way it was an endorsement of everything we are trying to do.”

He added: “What Peter can bring is a ferocious intelligence, but he has also got that dark side.”
