Goldie Cheung ‘quits X Factor’, say reports

There is speculation in the papers that X Factor hopeful Goldie Cheung has reportedly quit the show depite having made it through to the live finals.

Both the Mail On Sunday and the Sunday Mirror report that the 49-year-old Hong Kong native – who captured the attention of the judges with her wacky dance routines – had been due to move in to the X Factor house in Hertfordshire last week with the other 15 acts who had been chosen.

But there are claims Goldie did not show up at the house and has now pulled out of the show – with an X Factor spokesman telling the website she has quit ‘for personal reasons’.

There is speculation, however, that the 49-year-old left the show after her husband David Webb – an ex-civil servant who used to work for former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten – warned her she could be treated as the ‘novelty act’ in the way that Wagner was in 2010, rather than a serious contender to win the series.

Goldie has proven a popular act with the panel at the auditions and bootcamp despite her odd singing.

Saturday night’s bootcamp show saw her writhing around on the floor as she sang Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, while Sunday’s reportedly sees her sprawled across a piano while singing the classic Feeling Good.

The performance gets the thumbs up from the judges, with Kelly Rowland saying, “I cannot see this competition without Goldie.”

However the fitness instructor denied the rumours when questioned by the Mail On Sunday. “I haven’t left the show, who told you that? I haven’t even told anyone that,” she said.

If Goldie does leave it will be the latest blow for producers after they had to give the boot to potential finalist Sian Phillips.

The 24-year-old, from Liverpool, had to pull out of the judges houses after it emerged she had a criminal record and had served 10 days in jail – meaning she was unable to get a US visa to fly to Kelly Rowland’s house in Miami.

Producers have virtually removed Sian from the show – but since Goldie is prominently featured in boot camp and at the judges’ houses they may have to incorporate any decision she has made to leave into the programme.
