The storyline follows Holby City characters Lofty, Dom and Helen as they're giving the devastating news their baby has died...

Holby City is never one to shy away from tackling difficult issues and, next week, the medical drama will tackle the sensitive subject of stillbirth.

After getting over the shock of finding out his holiday fling Helen (Verity Marshall) was pregnant with his child, nurse Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern (Lee Mead) – and husband Dominic (David Ames) – have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby boy. But, in heart-breaking scenes, the excited parents-to-be will receive the devastating news that the baby has died.

The episode deals with Helen’s trauma of having to deliver the child and also explores how Lofty, Dom and Helen can move on from the tragedy.

The story will explore how Dom, Lofty and Helen can move on following the tragedy…

Lee Mead, who plays Lofty, said: “After knowing people close to me who have sadly been through a similar experience, I think it’s really important and brave for Holby City to shine a light on the reality that some families have to face. I’m really proud to have been a part of it.”

Simon Harper, executive producer of Holby City and Casualty, added: “Holby City doesn’t shy away from covering difficult and sometimes, as in this case, very sad issues which can resonate with the audience.

“The loss of the baby is terrible for Helen, and we also felt that the father’s perspective is traditionally perhaps overlooked. Lofty and Dom’s relationship gives us the chance to explore that. Lee, David and Verity all give beautifully pitched performances in a heart-breaking episode.”

Medical experts and bereavement specialists were consulted in preparation for the storyline.

Holby City continues Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC1.
