Holby City’s Amy Lennox on Chloe’s torment: ‘She’s numb and in shock!’

Tuesday night's Holby City featured an explosive showdown between Chloe Godard and Evan Crowhurst that turned VERY violent! Amy Lennox reveals more...

There were shocks aplenty in tonight’s Holby City when, following a major showdown between Chloe Godard and her stalker husband Evan Crowhurst, he was left fighting for life after being stabbed. Later, a traumatised Chloe revealed to mum Ange that she had been raped!

Holby City star Amy Lennox reveals all about Chloe’s torment…

When Chloe arrives at Cameron’s family cottage in the countryside, does she truly believe she’s alone?

“Chloe really does think she’s totally on her own there. I think she’s probably enjoying the peace and the isolation. Her mum Ange even rings her and says: ‘I really hope you’re actually relaxing and not doing any work’. But, Chloe just LOVES her work. So her way of being lost in it all is being lost in her work. So at that point Chloe’s very happy and just enjoying her own time. Unbeknownst to her, however, Evan has a tracker on Chloe’s car and he’s followed her all the way. So Chloe’s shocked when he just appears…. out of nowhere!”

Chloe Evan cottage main

Chloe (Amy Lennox) is stunned when evil Evan (Jack Ryder) suddenly turns up unannounced…

How does Chloe react?

“It’s a whole new level of threatening behaviour we see from Evan. He’s holding a knife cutting a lime for a drink and Chloe thinks: ‘Is that knife just for the lime?’ She doesn’t know. She kinda knows she’s in danger but she doesn’t really know how much. But we find out how much when she tries to make a run for it. She finds a tiny little moment where she thinks: ‘If I don’t do this now, I don’t know what I’m going to do’. So she goes for it – but that’s when the cat and mouse game really begins and it gets incredibly messy… and incredibly violent!”

It seems like Evan just wants to talk when he first shows up but, as you say, then the real Evan emerges…

“That’s exactly how he’s managed to get away with what he has for so long. He’s an absolute genius at manipulating, especially somebody with a slight chink in their armour. He’s absolutely drawn to people with vulnerability. It’s exactly what he did to his ex Sophie…”

Who, unbeknownst to Chloe, has just been admitted to Holby…

“That’s right! And it’s only when you see her come back to the hospital covered in bruises that you realise what Evan is actually capable of. Chloe doesn’t know that… until he starts throwing things at the glass door and chasing her all around the house!”

Holby Chloe Evan outside cottage

Chloe feels vulnerable as she and Evan talk outside the cottage. She just wants to get away from him…

Those scenes looked full on. As Chloe, you’re crawling up stairs, running through the house, then running through the fields. What was that like to film?

“Oh, it was exhausting. Thankfully, I had a few days off afterwards because I just needed to lie down! I was absolutely exhausted. That’s not to say that it wasn’t fun in its own way. It’s always really cool and exciting to be on location because it doesn’t happen very often. And that was the first time for me being somewhere other than Holby. So it was fun but it was challenging.”

As the episode progresses, we discover that, in their scuffle, Chloe has stabbed Evan in self-defence! And he’s rushed to the hospital with a knife in his chest…

“As manipulative as Evan is, I don’t think Chloe ever thought he was capable of that kind of violence. It’s just that, unfortunately, when he loses control, he’s just not prepared to draw the line. There is no line. Then you get the impression that he’s prepared to do anything to get her back… and that means ANYTHING!”

Indeed, there are further shocks to come when Chloe later confides in mum Ange (Dawn Steele) that Evan also raped her. How is she feeling?

“Chloe is completely numb and in shock and it’s all hugely traumatic for her. It’s just horrific. Because, not only has she been raped, it’s the fact that it’s exactly what happened to her mother. So life has gone full circle and history is repeating itself.”

Holby City Chloe Ange hug

Chloe is left traumatised by her ordeal. Will she able to come to terms with what’s happened in Holby City?

How does Chloe deal with things in the aftermath?

“Despite what Evan’s done, Chloe’s still a caring person, so she feels a massive amount of guilt over the fact that she’s effectively put him in the position he’s in now and genuinely fears for his life! I certainly wouldn’t say she still loves him but that doesn’t make it easy for her to deal with the fact that she may or may not have caused him severe injury. But she also wonders if she’ll be culpable for defending herself. We all know Evan’s the one who’s in the wrong, and he’s the one that really deserves it. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the law will see it that way…”

Holby City continues Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC1.
