Humans star Tom Goodman-Hill has admitted he found seeing co-star Gemma Chan as a robot for the first time unnerving.
The pair feature in the new Channel 4 series about a world where lifelike machines called synths have become such a big part of family life that they have changed the way people live, with Gemma playing Anita, the synth who lives with Tom’s character Joe’s family.
Tom told Good Morning Britain of Gemma’s transformation after going through ‘synth school’ training to perfect her robotic look: “It did completely freak us out the first time we all shot together.

“We were at the breakfast table and Gemma was in full synth mode and we hadn’t seen her do this at all. It was literally jaws on the floor because we couldn’t quite work out what was going on.
“It’s a really strange thing when you suddenly see someone fully in synth mode.”
Gemma added that the role had taxed her acting skills: “It was challenging because all the normal things you can do as an actor you can’t rely on, you have to find another way to do it.”

She added: “The outtakes from the show are just me bumping into the set,” while Tom joked: “I was employed because I’m always bumping into the set.”
The Mr Selfridge actor promised viewers would be treated to something completely different with the show: “The scope of the show was broad, it’s got so many strands to it, so you really feel like you’re in a world that you’ve never seen before.”
Humans screens on Channel 4 on Sunday at 9pm.
