Luther star Idris Elba has confessed he feels guilty for making fans wait so long for the latest series.
The Wire actor stars as DCI John Luther in the BBC crime show, a maverick detective hiding the dark secret that he takes criminal punishment into his own hands.
The third series of the drama returns to BBC One on Tuesday July 2, two years after the last series ended.
Idris, who is also a producer on the show, has had to fit Luther into his busy schedule producing, DJing and shooting other acting roles in Hollywood movies.
He said: “We didn’t know it would take off, Luther – the BBC went out on a limb for it. It feels amazing.
“I feel a little guilty because the audience has had to wait for the third season, so I’m eager to show them something great.”
The series has garnered critical acclaim and a global cult following, with Idris picking up a Golden Globe for his performance last year.
Speaking about Luther’s success, the 40-year-old actor said: “It’s a very nice feeling that this little show has done well in America, it’s done amazingly in places round the world like Australia, Belgium… Mexico believe it or not.
“So I’m very excited that I get to give them more. It came from a very crazy idea, and here we are three seasons later still excited about it. It’s great.”
