Former X Factor runners-up JLS have gone straight to the top of the album chart with their debut long player – outselling Robbie Williams.

The band’s self-titled debut beat Williams’ new release Reality Killed The Video Star into the number two spot – although it was a very close call.

Both albums sold over 200,000 copies – making them two of the fastest selling releases of the year so far – but JLS beat Williams to the top spot by a margin of less than one per cent.

“It is absolutely unbelievable that we have reached the number one spot on the album chart this week after such an incredible race with the pop icon that is Robbie Williams,” the band said in a statement.

“We are so overwhelmed by the support of the people that have purchased our album and can’t thank them enough for making our dreams come true. We truly have the best supporters in the world and can’t express our gratitude enough.”

The band knocked 3 Words, the debut solo album from Cheryl Cole, off the top of the charts. It fell to number seven.

However they failed to keep their hold on the top spot in the singles charts after debuting at number one last week.

Their song Everybody In Love was dethroned by the Black Eyed Peas, who performed on last week’s X Factor results show.
Leona Lewis’‘ new track Happy entered the charts at number two.
