X Factor 2009 champion Joe McElderry has said he “can’t believe” that he has been voted series winner.

“I can’t believe it,” he said on ITV2’s The Xtra Factor shortly after the result was announced. “I nearly collapsed on stage when I heard I’d won, I could literally feel myself falling backwards. Now I feel like I’m floating.”

However the 18-year-old – who beat fellow finalist Olly Murs to the series title on Sunday evening – admitted that he had been scared of losing the final.

“I did worry because I did think people might expect me to be better,” he confessed, “but then I’d made it to the final so I thought I’d better just give it my best shot.”

I’ve literally had the best experience of my life and I’ve met some of the best people and I can’t thank Cheryl enough for all you’ve done.”

And Cheryl – who has now had the winning act two years in a row – credited Joe and last year’s winner Alexandra Burke for her consecutive victories.

“For the past two years I’ve had the most amazingly talented artists and it’s down to them,” she said. “They’re the ones to have to get up and sing.

Meanwhile runner-up Olly Murs remained optimistic about the future, despite falling at the final hurdle.

I’ve had a great time regardless of what’s happened,” he said.

“JLS have been a true inspiration to me, it proves you don’t have to win the show to be successful. So whatever happens I hope I can do well after the show.”
