Jonathan Ross has recorded his first Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and returned with an apology for his phone prank and, as expected, a toned-down show.

The TV personality bounded on stage at the BBC TV Centre recording on Thursday morning with the quip: “So, where were we?”

According to Sky TV reporter Enda Brady, he then charged into edgy jokes at the expense of former President George W Bush, before adding: “What sort of idiot would say these things knowing they were going to be broadcast?”

This sort of knowing in-joke about his suspension from the BBC, following his phone prank at Andrew Sachs’s expense, set the template for the recording.

But he later apologised for the prank and said in future he would be ‘more aware’ of his behaviour.

Brady summed up Jonathan Ross’s performance as ‘very toned down… but still very, very funny’.

So… chastised and restrained – just how long will this ever-popular motormouth be able to keep his wit in first gear?
