Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright hopes to do a third series of the hit BBC1 crime drama and one of its stars, Karl Davies, has told What’s On TV he’d be very happy to be a part of it.

Karl played Daniel in the series, the son of Sgt Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire).

“Sally’s been saying there could be a third series of Happy Valley in the pipeline, which is great,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ll be involved, but I’d be delighted to play Daniel again. I’d also be very happy to just watch a third series as a viewer, because it’s such a terrific drama. Either way would be good for me.”

The former Emmerdale star continued: “So many people have said how much they enjoyed the last series of Happy Valley and how tense the final episode was. It’s been a wonderful series to be a part of. I was very pleased to be asked back for the second series because Sally Wainwright didn’t necessarily have to have me there. I was so grateful she found a way to get Daniel into the house.

“Working with Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran as Daniel’s mum and aunt was just terrific. I was like a sponge when I was on set with them, soaking up as much as I could from them because they were so superb. If Sarah doesn’t get some awards this time around I’ll be furious. She works so hard, and Happy Valley is such hard work. She deserves all the accolades she gets by portraying that level of intensity and emotion over the four-month shoot.”

Happy Valley is just one of many top dramas Karl’s appeared in since he quit playing Robert Sugden in Emmerdale in 2009. He’s about to star in another, The People Next Door, which will be broadcast on C4 very soon. It follows a young married couple whose life turns into a complete nightmare when they start snooping on their nasty neighbours.

“It’s been a great past few years for me as far as roles have gone,” said Karl, who also starred in The Syndicate 2 on BBC1 and Kingdom on ITV. “I’ve played some great characters.”
