Katherine Kelly says she has relished unleashing her evil side for her latest role as the unscrupulous editor-in-chief of a newspaper in BBC1 drama The Field of Blood (Thursday, Aug 8).

The Mr Selfridge actress, who made her name as Coronation Street’s fiery Becky McDonald, plays ruthless Maloney in the 1980s-set series alongside David Morrissey as the paper’s firm but fair editor.

“It was really nice to play an out-and-out baddie,” Katherine told TV & Satellite Week. “I have never tackled a character like her for a length of time, she is a horrible person who has no redeeming features. She has got a real 80s villain look and I had all my hair cut off for it to look really angular and spiky.”
