Last ever Extras watched by 5.3 million

The last ever episode of Extras was watched by 5.3 million viewers when it screened on BBC One on Wednesday night.

Penned by its stars Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the 80-minute episode saw its ‘hero’ Andy Millman, played by Gervais, reduced to appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in a bid to hang on to his dwindling fame.

Extras producer Charlie Hanson said he was ‘very pleased’ with the number of viewers, though it’s significantly less than the six million pulled in by Millman’s fictional sitcom When The Whistle Blows.

According to the BBC Online, Extras easily won its timeslot, with 3.9 million viewers for ITV1’s repeat of film The Queen and a further 2.8 million seeing Mrs Henderson Presents on BBC Two.

EastEnders was the evening’s most popular show, watched by 10.6 million.

It’s believed that Gervais, who played a frustrated sitcom star who aspired to Hollywood stardom, is reducing his TV roles so he can – oh, the post-modern wit! – actually step up his big-screen career.
