X Factor winner Leon Jackson has – as universally predicted – gone straight to No 1 with his first single When You Believe, just a week after he won the hit ITV reality TV series.

Leon’s single sold 276,000 copies, five times more than the runner-up, Katie Melua’s duet with the late Eva Cassidy.

When You Believe was the hot favourite to capture the Christmas No 1 spot, and in a double victory for The X Factor franchise, Leona Lewis was top of the album chart with her debut, Spirit. Simon Cowell’s Christmas has come two days early!

The Pogues’ classic Fairytale of New York got to No 4 in the singles chart after a valiant but futile effort by fans to get it to the top of the festive charts.

Leon told Radio 1’s chart show: “It’s been a great ending to a fantastic year and it’s just the best Christmas present I could ever wish for.”
