Lily Collins as Fantine in BBC1's Les Misérables
The BBC has released first look images from their massive new drama, Les Misérables, which stars Dominic West, David Oyelowo and Lily Collins.
Acclaimed dramatist Andrew Davies, the man who brought us Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth, has adapted Victor Hugo’s 19th century classic, which is set against the backdrop of France at the time of civil unrest.
The Beeb promises Andrew’s adaptation will “vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery” as it “revels” in the cat-and-mouse relationship between convict Jean Valjean and police inspector Javert.
Dominic stars as Jean Valjean alongside former Spooks star David Oyelowo as Javert and Lily Collins as Fantine.
Dominic, best known for his roles in The Wire and The Affair, previously said: “Jean Valjean is one of the great characters in world literature.
“His epic journey of redemption is one of the extraordinary roles an actor can take on, and I can’t wait to get stuck in to bringing Andrew’s brilliant adaptation to the screen.”
David has said: “To play an iconic role like Javert is any actor’s dream, but to play it as written by Andrew Davies goes beyond my wildest dreams.”
Among the other big names in the drama is Broadchurch actress Olivia Colman, who’ll soon be seen playing The Queen in Netflix drama The Crown.
Les Misérables will be screened on BBC1 next year.
