Luke Friend finishes third in X Factor final

The X Facor dream is over for Luke Friend after he finished in third place in the final on Saturday night.

The tousle-haired 17-year-old singer lost out after polling the lowest number of votes following Saturday’s performances – which included a duet with Ellie Goulding.

As a result Sam Bailey and Nicholas McDonald will battle it out for the series title on Sunday – with the winner scoring a much-coveted record deal.

Luke appeared gracious in defeat, afterwards singing the praises of mentor Louis Walsh.

“Thank you so much man, you have been a great mentor,” he said. “You have been amazing to work with.”

Luke added: “I got here and this is absolutely amazing. I want to get out there, gigging, doing stuff that I love. I can’t wait for the tour.”

Saturday night’s show saw the finalists performing a new song each, as well as their duets – with Nicholas McDonald teaming up with Westlife’s Shane Filan and Sam Bailey taking to the stage with Nicole Scherzinger.

Luke scored a mixed response from the judges for his first performance of the night, of the fun chart-topper We Are Young – with Gary Barlow criticising his vocals.

“Personally I felt the verses were too low for your voice but when we hit the chorus you really started to sing. I hope everyone votes on the choruses and not the verse,” he said.

However Sharon Osbourne raved about the performance, saying: “You have come a long way little boy and I’m so happy you’re here.”
