Martin Freeman has signed up to star in the TV adaptation of the movie Fargo.
The British actor will join Billy Bob Thornton in the 10-part series based on the Coen brothers’ 1996 Oscar-winning crime drama, which starred Frances McDormand.
Sherlock star Martin will play small-town insurance salesman Lester Nygaard, who is based on the character William H Macy played in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Billy Bob will play Lorne Malvo, the manipulative man who meets Lester and sets him on a path of destruction. His character is similar to that played by Steve Buscemi in the movie.
The new version of Fargo will have different characters and storylines to the movie, but the humorous crime stories will remain ‘remarkably true to the film’, according to FX network boss John Landgraf.
Joel and Ethan Coen, who won a best screenplay Oscar for Fargo, are executive producers on the series.
Filming will take place in Canada and the show is expected to screen in the US next spring.
