The Voice finalist Matt Fletcher has said he refused to bow to pressure from BBC bosses to shave off his beard, as he feels it is the source of his vocal power.

The 34-year-old – who forms one half of the only duo in the finals along with partner Sueleen – revealed he had been asked by producers to shave and trim his long hair ahead of the live shows which begin this Saturday.

“They were talking about taking off the whole beard, but it’s a part of me and I lose my power without it,” Matt admitted.

“It’s just who I am. I’m comfortable looking like this and if you’re comfortable with yourself it gives you confidence to do your best.”

Matt added that he did have a fight on his hands when it came to keeping his hirsuite look.

“They did try and I said something like ‘I think I could take two or three of you down before you pin me down and shave it, but if you want to go for it, go for it’, and they backed off,” he said.

And he had the full support of Sueleen, who added, “I love him like that. It would be horrible to see all that gone.”

Matt and Sueleen will sing the Fleetwood Mac hit Go Your Own Way on Saturday’s show as they bid to retain their place in Team Tom Jones.

The show will see the acts on Will.i.am and Tom Jones’ teams perform for the first time this series, with one from each team being sent home on Sunday night.
