Melanie Masson has become the second casualty of The X Factor 2012 live finals, after losing out to District 3 following Sunday night’s sing-off.
As with last weekend’s controversial show the vote was once again sent to deadlock after both of the bottom two acts each received two votes from the judges.
However, with one of Louis Walsh’s acts in the bottom two there was no question of his decision to save them, while Gary voted to save his own act and Tulisa went with District 3.
“Melanie you have one of the most amazing voices in the competition. As for the lads, you’re in completely different areas, but both incredibly talented,” she said. “I have to go with my heart and being honest my heart is with the lads,
In the end it was Nicole Scherzinger who sent the vote to deadlock after her vote for Melanie brought the scores even.
“Boys you did an amazing job, I know I gave you a hard time yesterday, but you knocked it out of the park at Bootcamp and you did it tonight,” Nicole said.
“Melanie, I have to go off of the saving song that I just saw, you are the oldest in this competition, and I know you have been waiting for this your whole life and I felt it in that performance.”
And in the end it was Melanie who left after polling the lowest number of votes from the public.
Her departure means that Gary Barlow has now just two acts left in the competition – Kye Sones and Chris Maloney – while the other judges have yet to lose any of theirs.
Melanie admitted afterwards she was disappointed to be leaving the show but added, “I’ve absolutely enjoyed every single second of being here. It’s just been the best experience and I’ve loved every minute of it.”
Gary, meanwhile, said he was “gutted” at Melanie’s departure, and added, “For me, Melanie is one of the best singers in the competition.”
Ten other acts, including favourites Ella Henderson and Jahmene Douglas went straight through to next weekend’s show on the strength of the public vote.
And Rylan Clark, whose saving on last weekend’s show sparked the ensuing row over voting, also avoided the bottom two this week – much to his delight and the annoyance of Gary Barlow, who was spotted grimacing as the result was announced.
Sunday’s results show also featured performances from Taylor Swift and former X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson.
