Mr Peabody & Sherman with Marie Antoinette

Doggone! A bespectacled, bow-tie wearing beagle with a genius IQ and a penchant for terrible puns goes time-travelling with his adopted human son in this charming animated comedy adventure based on cartoon characters from late-1950s, early-1960s US TV.

Scientist, entrepreneur, Nobel Prize winner, gourmet chef and a jillion other things besides, Mr Peabody has invented a time machine he calls the WABAC (pronounced ‘Way Back’), which he uses to give son Sherman first-hand experience of momentous events in world history. Then Sherman takes the WABAC for an unauthorised spin to impress schoolmate Penny, throwing the space-time continuum into chaos…

Adapted for the big screen with wit and zip by Lion King director Rob Minkoff, Mr Peabody & Sherman has cheeky fun with its versions of famous historical figures – Ancient Greek hero Agamemnon as a beefy jock, an exasperated Leonardo da Vinci trying to get a smile out of the Mona Lisa, a cake-gorging Marie Antoinette – but it’s Mr Peabody himself (voiced by Modern Family’s Ty Burrell) who is the most delightful character.

Erudite, pedantic, prissily formal, he sounds a lot like Niles from Frasier but he’d make a great Dog-tor Who.
