The Night Manager 2 could see the return of the devilish Richard Roper

One of the writers behind the second series of BBC1 hit The Night Manager has said we can expect some of the most popular characters in the thriller to return.

The Night Manager, which was based on the 1993 novel by John le Carre, starred Tom Hiddleston as hero Jonathan Pine and Hugh Laurie as the villainous Richard Roper.

Now spy thriller writer Charles Cumming, who is one of the writers developing the second series, has revealed that some of the characters will return.

He told Event magazine that their “job is to write a season that’s going to be even better than the first one, but also stay faithful to the tone of the world that was created by le Carre and to the characters.”

He added: “All I am permitted to say is that le Carre has given his blessing to the project. The four of us in the writers’ room are sworn to silence. Some characters that the audience know and love will be returning, others will not.”

We know that Roper’s henchman Corky (Tom Hollander) won’t be returning after meeting an unfortunate end. However, Tom Hiddleston would surely return as Pine and while arms dealer Roper (Hugh Laurie) looked like he was heading for a sticky end at the end of the first series, he could have survived.

Others that could return include Elizabeth Debicki as Jed and Olivia Colman as Angela Burr.

The first series of The Night Manager attracted over six million viewers and picked up a string of awards.
