The popular comedy The Inbetweeners is to be axed by the show’s writers because the characters are getting too old.

Legions of fans will no doubt be upset to hear that there will be no more Inbtweeners episodes written once the current series finishes – but there will be a movie and a final special to see off the schoolboys one last time.

According to The Sun, co-writer Damon Beesley said: “In our minds, we’ve always thought that this series, this (school) year, is obviously the closing of the story.

“We’ve got a movie in the pipeline, where they are going away on their first holiday together without their parents – which is obviously an important part of the story.

“And then they are going to go to disappear and go off to different universities.”

The show has developed a cult-like status following the day-to-day lives of pupils Will, Jay, Simon and Neil with their foul language and risque humour.

The season three premiere of the Inbetweeners attracted a massive three million viewers – E4’s highest ever audience – when it aired last week.

The Inbetweeners continues on Monday nights at 9pm on E4.
