(500) Days of Summer - Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Zooey Deschanel play lovers Tom & Summer in this quirky romantic comedy

Just when I was despairing of Hollywood ever again turning out a fresh and funny romantic comedy, along came (500) Days of Summer to revive my faith in the genre.

Director Marc Webb’s self-consciously quirky movie couldn’t be further from the usual romcom slush, however, as you can tell right from the moment the film’s droll narrator asserts: “This is not a love story”.  Be prepared, rather than offering the usual promise of happy ever after, (500) Days of Summer is the story of a break-up.

The movie relates the bitter-sweet love affair between Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Tom and Zooey Deschanel’s Summer, but it tells their story completely out of sequence, so that the events of their relationship, from dizzy courtship and rapturous first love all the way to painful separation, appear to have been put on random shuffle play. In less assured hands, this could easily have proved insufferable, but with smart writing, stylish direction and charming leads, (500) Days of Summer proves surprisingly endearing.
