The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - John Travolta’s crook hijacks a subway train

Tony Scott can’t wait to ramp up the action with his remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, that cracking 1974 thriller where a bunch of gunmen hijack a crowded New York subway train and hold the city to ransom. John Travolta’s crook and Denzel Washington’s good guy – playing, more or less, the roles taken by Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau in the original – have barely got started on the verbal duels and mind games that made the first film so gripping before Scott is spinning his camera around and whipping things into a frenzy with car chases and shoot-outs.

Still, if you want to find out how Scott got a police car to hurtle off a flyover, flip over in mid air and smash land with a metal-splintering crunch, then a making-of featurette and director’s commentary on the film’s Blu-ray and DVD releases will assuage your curiosity.

Released on Blu-ray & DVD on 11th January 2010.
