Pete’s Peek | Vincent Cassel falls from grace in the gothic chiller The Monk

Directed by Dominik Moll (Lemming/Harry He’s Here To Help), The Monk is the latest adaptation of the cult classic Gothic novel by Matthew Lewis, which follows the rise and fall of a Capuchin Monk in 17th century Spain.

A Dangerous Method star Vincent Cassel takes the title role of Capucino Ambrosio, who is tempted by a woman dressed as a monk into lusting after a beautiful woman. But the disguised monk is actually an instrument of Satan who uses black magic to damn Ambrosio’s soul forever.

One of the most disturbing novels of the 18th-century, The Monk, has been adapted for the screen a number of times, but few have been able to match the erotic and debauched power of the original text. Will this new version succeed where others have failed?
