Queer as Folk creator to make two gay dramas for Channel 4

Russell T Davies is set to return to exploring contemporary gay life with two new series for Channel 4.

The creator of the groundbreaking Queer As Folk, who was also the man who brought back Doctor Who, is setting the new series in Manchester, which was the location for his previous frank and hard-hitting programmes.

Casting for the programmes called Cucumber and Banana – which will begin filming in the spring – has not yet been confirmed.

Cucumber will be screened by Channel 4 and follows a character in his mid-40s called Henry whose comfortable, settled life with his boyfriend unravels after a wild night out.

Banana will be shown by E4 and revolves around some of the figures in Henry’s life.

In addition there will be an online series called Tofu, which will act as a sex guide, in response to the subjects covered in the stories each week.

Channel 4’s head of drama Piers Wenger said: “No one can look into the heart and soul of modern relationships quite like Russell and, across Channel 4, E4 and online, he paints an unflinching and forensic portrait of how our sex lives affect us all.

“It might be 15 years since Queer As Folk, but he has made it more than worth the wait.”
