Richard and Judy could axe their own show if ratings fail to improve next year.

Chat show legends Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan used to attract three million viewers on Channel 4 and were reportedly paid £1 million to host their new show on UKTV digital channel Watch.

But only 12,000 viewers tuned into a recent edition of Richard & Judy’s New Position, according to reports in The Sun.

Richard told Jo Russell’s Absolute Radio Show: “The series is planned till Christmas 2009. If it doesn’t work, it’s not the end of the world.

When you go to a new channel, let alone a new programme on an existing channel, of course the ratings are going to be incredibly low compared to before. They just die.

“It takes months for a new channel to establish itself, and Watch has only been going since the beginning of October.

“I’ve likened it to opening a franchise in a big new department store that’s only been open 10 minutes. It’s going to take a while for the shoppers to come in.

“Frankly, we predicted this before we even left.

“We knew we were going to have a very, very small audience to begin with, but the trick is to build it, and that is going to take months.”

Meanwhile, meanwhile Richard is to fill in for Richard Bacon on his 5 Live show for three nights in January, his first radio show for 30 years since he worked for BBC Radio Cumbria.
