Ricky Gervais is to appear in long-running US children’s favourite Sesame Street.

The episode – to be shot in New York next month – will see The Office star singing a self-penned song to furry red monster Elmo.

“I’ve always liked the show and, as a failed rock star, I try to squeeze in the odd composition whenever possible,” said the British comic.

Ricky will join the likes of David Beckham, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro and Alicia Keys who have all made an appearance on the show.

And this isn’t the first time Ricky has sung one of his own works on TV – in 2006 he appeared in an episode of The Simpsons in which he serenaded Marge with an original song called ‘Lady Blue’.

The show attracted the highest viewing figures ever for a Simpsons episode on Sky1.

Ricky has recently finished writing the script for The Men at the Pru – a major feature film he describes as a cross between The Office and Mad Men.

Set in Reading in the 1970s, the film follows the lives of two friends who work for the Prudential building society.
