Comedian Ronnie Corbett has joined Tess Daly as a guest host on Strictly Come Dancing after Bruce Forsyth was forced to pull out of this week’s show.

The veteran funnyman stepped in after Forsyth was ordered by doctor’s to miss Saturday’s programme, after falling ill with flu.

It Takes Two presenter Claudia Winkleman has stepped in to cover Tess’ backstage duties, interviewing the couples after they finish their dances.

Corbett – clad in a pair of trousers he said were “made by Action Man” – wished Forsyth a speedy recovery.

And he spent much of the show sitting in the audience apparently seeking advice from Forsyth by phone.

At one point, after Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna had performed their cha cha cha, he joked “He says his temperature has just gone up from 110 to 120.”

The 81-year-old wasn’t the only person absent from Saturday’s show.

Jade Johnson, who had been due to dance the tango with partner Ian Waite, was forced to pull out at the last minute after suffering a knee injury during dress rehearsals on Saturday afternoon.

The athlete, who was interviewed backstage, appeared close to tears as she expressed her disappointment.

“I really wanted to do this dance tonight,” she said, “I really feel like I’m letting Ian and everybody down.”
