Russell Brand is to return to the radio, six months after he left the BBC in disgrace following the obscene phone messages scandal.

The comedian will host a two-hour football special on talkSPORT on Sunday evening with Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, it has been announced.

The 33-year-old quit his Radio 2 show in October after he and Jonathan Ross left a series of lewd messages on the actor Andrew Sachs’ answering machine.

The two presenters said Russell had slept with the 78-year-old Fawlty Towers actor’s granddaughter, Georgina Baillie, 23, and joked that Sachs might kill himself.

Two senior Radio 2 executives also resigned in the wake of the scandal, while Jonathan Ross was suspended without pay for 12 weeks.

TalkSPORT said listeners could expect ‘a heavy dose of cutting-edge comedy, controversial commentary and the odd eye-opening anecdote’ in the show, which will be broadcast at 9pm on Sunday.

The show has been billed as a one-off, but it’s understood that it may become a regular feature if it’s a success.

Moz Dee, talkSPORT programme director, said: “TalkSPORT welcomes Russell back to radio. He’s a unique talent who understands the medium brilliantly, and together with Noel Gallagher, it’ll be a must listen.

“Both are proper football fans who just happen to be two of the most creative minds in popular culture.”
