Russell Grant has become the latest celebrity to be booted off Strictly Come Dancing following this weekend’s live show from Wembley Arena.

The astrologer – who had delighted audiences with his flamboyant routines over the past few weeks – lost out after finding himself in the bottom two with Holly Valance and Artem Chigvintsev.

Both were in the danger zone for the first time – but ultimately it was Russell’s combination of judges’ scores and public votes that saw him finish last.

However he accepted his defeat gracefully, admitting he had been glad simply to make it to Wembley – and adding that his time on the show had been “fantastic”.

“Every show I’ve done has been a highlight,” he said. “The public have been great, the audiences have been great, I’ve learnt from the judges, I’ve listened to the judges – but most of all I’ve had the most fantastic partner in Flavia Cacace.”

And Flavia also sung Russell’s praises, saying, “I completely agree with everyone out there who absolutely loves you because you are a true inspiration. It has been an absolute pleasure and joy partnering you.”

Russell had made his mark on Saturday night’s Wembley show by shooting out of a giant cannon at the start of his jive.

Although the audience loved the routine, the judges were divided. Craig Revel Horwood told him that “Dumbo springs to mind,” although Len Goodman summed up what many people were thinking.

“I don’t care how many great dancers we have and how many series of Strictly we have,” he said, “people will always say ‘do you remember when Russell flew out of that cannon?'”

Seven couples now remain, with just four weeks until this year’s final.

Anita Dobson, who was in last weekend’s bottom two, was among those who made it through this week on the public vote, while Robbie Savage, Alex Jones, Chelsee Healey, Harry Judd and Jason Donovan were also voted through to next weekend.
